Je suis finalement revenu de Las Vegas. Tout s'est très déroulé, je suis un peu fatigué par la grosse journée par exemple! J'ai publié un nouvel album avec les photos que j'ai prises lors du voyage. Jetez-y un coup d'oeil...

General Session

 

We had a great keynote from one of the co-founder of VMWare, Dr. Mendel Rosenblum who talked about about the future of virtualization for usage such as intrusion detection at the virtualization layer and how it could be used to control attacks to the virtual machines. Another interesting direction that virtualization might take is on how applications are delivered by the means of complete multi-tiered environments packaged as virtual machines.

Customer Experiences Implementing Virtual Infrastructure

 

This session was a panel of people talking about their experiences using VMWare in large scale deployment ranging from 250 to 750 virtual machines running around the world. I was actually surprised that some of them are looking at migrating their whole environment to ESX even for high performance workloads such as SQL Server. They established virtual machine as the default environment when they need to deploy new servers ask themselves why a certain server would need physical hardware to run instead of determining if it could run in VMWare.

 

VMWare and CPU Virtualization Technology

 

This session was highly technical as it discussed the different strategies used to virtualize CPU and how hardware such as Intel VT or AMD Pacifica can help in that area. While hardware improvements help, they still rely heavily on their binary translation feature to optimize VM execution.

 

VMWare with CLARiiON

 

Another really interesting session on how we can use the various software for CLARiiON arrays to achieve high availability through snapshots and replication. There was also an explanation of how raw LUNs, VMFS and raw device mapping are used to achieve different objecctives. The speaker was really good and knew her stuff very well. This helped to make the presentation very interactive as she was able to answer even the toughest questions.

 

Resource Management for ESX Server 1

 

This session covered the different mechanism to control access to resources in ESX such as shares, minimum and maximum at the CPU, memory, disk and network level. A brief overview of memory page sharing and how it works was also given. The question we had regarding was also covered in that session as to wheter ESX is smart enough to schedule SMP VM across two physical CPUs rather than trying to run the SMP using 2 logical CPUs, so yes it can make the distinction.

 

Provisioning and Migrating Virtual Machines

 

This was a very straigtforward session as I had the chance to experiment with most of the content covered. I liked the explanation of what are the advantages of using raw device mappings mainly because it answered some of the questions I still had after the CLARiiON session. Also covered the basics of using templates in VirtualCenter.

 

Troubleshooting VMWare System Problem 3

 

This was another highly technical session that went in depth on how to analyze the logs in ESX for troubleshooting purposes. It gave quite a few indicators as what are the basic troubleshooting steps used to isolate the stability or performance problem. We covered in great extent log analysis which was really useful to diagnose hardware problems at the ESX host level.

La première journée de VMWorld fut assez tranquille puisqu'elle était dédiée aux partenaires/revendeurs de VMWare. J'ai eu l'occasion de visiter plusieurs des exposants dans le Solutions Exchange.

 

J'ai passé un bon bout de temps au kiosque de la compagnie Centrify, qui offre une solution d'intégration assez impressionante des systèmes *nix avec Active Directory. J'ai eu une bonne démonstration de la fonctionnalité allant de l'intégration de comptes ordinateur jusqu'à la fonctionnalité de "single sign-on" avec Apache et Tomcat qui utilise Kerberos. Un aspect intéressant est la possibilité d'utiliser les fonctions de Group Policy avec les systèmes *nix. La fonctionnalité de base offre la possibilité de controller les paramètres de pare-feu et autres. On peut aussi étendre la capacité des GPO en utilisant le language PERL pour controller d'autres aspects du système.

 

Aussi j'ai pu avoir une petite démonstration des nouvelles fonctionnalités qui seront disponibles dans Virtual Server 2005 R2 au kiosque de Microsoft. Une copie de Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise Edition nous a été donnée gratuitement et la mise à jour à Virtual Server 2005 R2.¸

 

Aussi vu un petit démo de VMotion en action qui est toujours intéressant à voir.

 

Un autre logiciel que j'ai trouvé intéressant vient de Evident Software qui permet d'allouer les coûts des systèmes par leur utilisation.

Troubleshooting VMWare Problems 1

 

This session was supposed to be an introduction session to the troubleshooting, but it went in quite a bit of depth as to what are the tools that can be used to diagnose the different problems that can occur with ESX. Since the session was given by a support engineer at IBM, a lot of IBM specifics were integrated in the presentation which made some parts irrelevant because they were discussing problems encoutered with specific IBM hardware such as the FastT SANs.

 

Troubleshooting VMWare Problems 2

 

This session which should have been the introductory session, did a much better job at explaining the common problems that can be encountered and their solution in a ESX environment. A VMWare instructor was giving the presentation and the greater experience could really be noticed.

 

ESX Server and VirtualCenter Installation and configuration 101

 

A very basic session. Overall I was a bit disapointed with the content as they only went through a default installation without discussing much as to why certain options are preferred over some others. The first presenter seemed to stumble at even the most simple questions regarding the installation, which I find quite disapointing. I was impressed by the simplicity of deploying VirtualCenter as it only took a few minute to complete the server installation.

 

 

Very interesting session on how to attribute cost of servers in a virtual environment. The speakers in the panel advised to be careful not to go overboard with the cost allocation using the server utilisation method as it can get overly complex to accurately calculate the actual costs. Most of them seemed to suggest that CPU utilization would be a good general metric in most case to establish costs.

 

Business Continuity and Storage Management for the Virtualized Datacenter

 

Intereting session presented by Symantec that showed their Veritas products adapted to the VMWare environment and how they can be used for disaster recovery. One particularly interesting topic was the automation of testing of recoveries using their Fire Drill software. This can take a snapshot of your production environement and simulate the complete recover process for validity, while at the same time establish recovery time metrics that can be used as indicators for process improvement and for accurate prediction on how much time is needed to recover a certain environment.

 

ESX Architectural Directions

 

Definately the most technical session of the day and very interesting. The presenter was the director of R&D for the VMKernel development. He really knew what he was talking about. During the presentation we were able to see what will happen in the future of virtualization not only from a software perspective but also from hardware point of view. There was an interesting discussion regarding the different ways I/O can be achieve in VMWare and their advantages and tradeoffs. We can see that hardware vendors have a lot of work to do in order for virtualization technologies to achieve maximum performance and efficiency.

 

Je vais aller voir ce qu'Elvis trame à Vegas! En espérant que j'ai mon billet d'avion pour lundi :-p!

Finalement revenu de voyage!

 

J'aurais aimé passer plus de temps en C.B. mais mon frère Pascal avait du boulot à faire et Olivier avait des rendez-vous avec des éleveurs d'animaux en Alberta. Aussi le fait que mon budget était loin d'être illimité aidait à prendre la décision du retour.

 

On a fait un petit arrêt au Lac Louise et à Ski Louise en montant. On a fait l'ascension de Ski Louise (j'ai arrêté à 2400 des 2600m de la montagne) j'étais seul en haut et en sandale donc je me suis dit que je voudrais bien faire le reste du voyage en un morceau. Superbe vue, ça valait l'effort déployé!

 

Somme toute on s'est bien amusé, on a fait beaucoup de randonnée pédestre à Squamish et à Seymour. L'escalade du mont Chief Stawamus à Squamish était assez intense pour des non-initiés mais on s'est vraiment bien amusé. Vous regarderez les photos qu'on a prise on sommet avec mes frères. On a terminé ça avec une petite escapade à la plage que j'ai bien apprécié. La descente des pistes de descente à Seymour était assez éprouvante, je me suis blessé a des ligaments du genou. Je sais pas comment mon frère fait pour descendre ça en vélo, j'irais même pas en motocross! Malheureusement je n'ai pas eu le temps d'aller faire du vélo de montage comme prévu, l'année prochaine peut-être!

 

Le retour s'est bien déroulé malgré la très ennuyante autoroute 17 (qu'on a renommé La Route Des Lamentations) qui sillonne le nord de l'Ontario jusqu'à quelques centaines de kilomètre d'Ottawa.

Demain sera le grand départ d'une aventure épique pour mon frère Olivier et moi. Plus de 5000km de route nous attendent. Le but de ce voyage est de réunir les trois frère, soit Bro 1.0 (Pascal), Bro 2.0 (Olivier) et le dernier modèle, le plus perfectionné des trois soit dit en passant, Bro 3.0 (moi même, Mathieu).

 

Un petit break de la routine du travail va me faire le plus grand bien je crois! Il n'y a rien de mieux pour décrocher des ptit maux quotidien qu'un bon congé. En espérant que tout se déroule bien pour mes collègues durant mon absence.

 

Donc je salut le monde que je laisse derrière moi; les femmes d'abord: Anabel (oui je sais que aimerais ça partir aussi :-p), Kathy (travaille pas trop fort là, repose toi et prend soins de toi) et Audrey (désolé encore de manquer ta légendaire épluchette de blé d'inde), maintenant les dudes, Charles (je vais essayer de blogger le voyage comme un pro), les colocs Phil et Karl (allez pas toute voir les films cools pendant que je vais être partis mes écoeurants!) et pour terminer Steph et PL qui m'ont organisé sur le plan des télécom et informatique :-p et tout les autres gars du Tech Team qui vont surement s'amuser pendant mon absence!

 

Il faut pas oublier papa et maman à qui je dois la chance d'être là pour faire un voyage comme ça! Bonjour aussi à mes grand-parents Raymonde, Sébastien et Julienne.

 

En espérant que tout se déroule bien et que nous arriverons à destination dans un seul morceau. Je vais essayer de garder un journal de bord avec des photos prises lors du voyage. Il sera probablement mis à jour seulement lorsqu'on sera rendu à destination.
